What is the natural resource management program (NRMP)?

NRMP is a science to management program that provides students with scientific knowledge and understanding of the interconnectedness of physical, chemical, biological, economic, social, and policy elements of natural resource management and environmental studies. 

NRMP’s mission statement is two-fold:

• To support local initiatives and priorities developed within the islands toward conserving and protecting its precious natural resources; and
• To promote the efficient use of human, institutional, and financial resources to meet local and regional goals and objectives.
  “A key element within the program is effective capacity development at the institutional and community level, reducing the reliance on expatriate and outside expertise and increasing the ability of local institutions and individuals to address the ever-increasing challenges faced by the islands. The NRMP curriculum encourages and follows a regional approach to solving problems and developing strategies through working in cooperation with the local agencies, including working with non-governmental organizations (NGOs), as well as individuals toward producing effective management of the nation’s coral reefs, fisheries, marine biotechnology, ocean resources, and other natural/environmental related resources.”

The eight (8) leaning outcomes of the NRM are as follows:

1. Describe the importance of natural resource management to human societies;
2. Determine and understand the influence of human culture and settlement on terrestrial, aquatic, and atmospheric systems;
3. Demonstrate the methodology of system integration and best practices of conservation management;
4. Conduct the performance of field monitoring, data collection, mapping, data analysis, record keeping, and reporting;
5. Describe the roles of politics and economic development on natural resources management;
6. Apply cost-benefit analysis and emerging forms of co-evaluation to the management of natural resources;
7. Determine the appropriate land use, planning and zoning; and
8. Demonstrate knowledge of the CNMI, federal, and international environmental laws and regulatory enforcement procedures.

The ENRO Club is an NMC-recognized student group that gather themselves together to develop scholarly interactions and camaraderie, establish career contacts, learn organizational skills, conduct meetings and seminars, gain leadership and team building skills.

ENRO Club provides learning opportunities by exercising managerial and leadership skills through being officers and members of the club. The students generated value-added knowledge in their curricular and extra-curricular activities, including volunteerism efforts.

The ENRO Club was founded in 2010 by Dr. Alfredo B. De Torres based on his experience in volunteerism and outreach community works at the University of the Philippines where he served as a faculty member.

On March 2013, ENRO Club was a recipient of the “Group Volunteer National Earth Team Award” with a “Trophy and Plaque” handed out by U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resource Conservation Office outperforming other environmental organizations throughout the nation in winning the award. The ENRO Club was also awarded various recognitions and certificates of appreciation from their outreach community engagements in the CNMI government and non-government organizations (NGOs).

The NRM major students, as well as the other NMC students are encouraged to join the ENRO Club for exceptional voluntary activities.
