The latest news from Northern Marianas College

The Northern Marianas College’s Community Development Institute and School of Education, in partnership with the CNMI Public School System Career and Technical Education Program, recently hosted the 2024 cohort of the Teacher Academy Summer Program (TASP).

TASP is a six-week summer program designed to introduce high school students and incoming college freshmen to various educational career pathways through rigorous core academic classes and industry-related, project-based learning.

Students focused on four main concentrations during the program: Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education, Special Education, Rehabilitation & Human Services. Additionally, the CNMI PSS Chamorro Carolinian Language & Heritage Studies program was integrated as an additional focus that participants were able to learn more about.

The participants of TASP are paired with mentors from NMC’s School of Education to provide guidance and support throughout their time in the program.

Recent high school graduate of Tinian Jr./Sr. High School, Tano King II, shared in his keynote, “Since my freshman year of high school, I have been dreaming of becoming a teacher. This dream has been a guiding light throughout my academic journey, influencing my decisions and choices I have made throughout high school. Joining the Teacher Academy Summer Program was a pivotal step toward realizing this dream. This program provided me with invaluable insights into the teaching profession, highlighting both its challenges and rewards. The experience has reinforced my belief that teaching is not just a job, but a calling that can profoundly impact the lives of others.”

In his congratulatory remarks to the students of TASP, NMC School of Education Director Roland Merar stated, “As you move forward, remember that the skills and knowledge you have gained during this program are the foundation of your bright future in education.”

CNMI’s Acting Commissioner of Education Jackie Quitugua congratulated the participants on their completion of the program, “I commend each of you for your hard work, perseverance, and passion for education. Your journey as lifelong learners has only just begun, and I have no doubt that you will continue to make a positive difference in the lives of your students and communities.”

Students who have completed the Teacher Academy Summer Program are given the opportunity to continue into the next phase of the program, taking a course each semester at NMC for 5 semesters, sponsored by CNMI Public School System, providing a head start on degree plans in the School of Education.
