Many enthusiastic summer campers ages 7 to 12 recently concluded a week-long adventure at this year’s 4-H Camp Maga’lahi Tinian, held at the Fiesta Grounds from July 8 to July 12. Guided by staff and counselors ages 13 to 19, campers were able to participate in an immersive experience that fostered teamwork and cultural exploration. The outdoor camp experience provided lasting memories and valuable skills for all participants.
Campers were launched into a week of summer adventures filled with engaging activities and exploring Tinian’s various organizations. Themed days packed the camp program, allowing campers a chance to fully delve into activities dedicated to aquatic exploration, competitive sports, and hands-on healthy practices with the NMC Cooperative Research, Extension, and Education Services (CREES) Nutrition and Health Program. They bonded with counselors through a range of activities including sports tournaments, a tour of the Commonwealth Ports Authority Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (CPA-ARFF) Station, and traditional talaya throwing and shallow bottom fishing. With days dedicated to recreational sports, healthy living workshops, and sustainable fishing, these campers were able to learn many new skills and expose themselves to Tinian’s diverse opportunities for learning and exploration, fostering an enriching summer fun experience.
By the end of camp, the young participants participated in an awards ceremony where they were recognized and awarded for their hard work. The House of Kepuha was awarded with the coveted House of the Summer title.
A camp counselor reflected on their transformative experience with 4-H Camp Maga’lahi, sharing, “Camp was a fun and adventurous experience. I was able to connect with our campers and build a bond with them. Something I find really interesting about Camp Maga’lahi is the environment, there’s always that sense of belonging and a sense of safe space no matter where we come from. I find myself a lot more open and it’s something I never thought I could do.”
A parent of a camper expressed their enthusiasm for 4-H Camp Maga’lahi, saying, “I think the 4-H Camp was a fun and enriching experience for kids of all ages. It provides an opportunity to connect with nature, try new activities and make lasting memories with friends. Camp was also helping our children build skills like teamwork, communication, openness and leadership. Overall, I believe camp is a great way to break away from the routine of everyday life and enjoy some time outdoors.”
“Summer camp offers a nurturing environment where campers and counselors alike can freely express themselves, delve into new ideas, and bravely step beyond their comfort zones through the 'challenge by choice' approach. Observing the outstanding leadership of our Tinian camp counselors, guided by Ms. Jacklyn Sanchez, as they actively involve campers in experiential learning, is truly inspiring.” stated Family, Community, and Youth Development State/Territory Program Leader Tayna C. Belyeu-Camacho.
4-H Camp Maga’lahi is conducted in partnership with the Northern Marianas College Cooperative Research, Extension, and Education Services Family, Community, and Youth Development Program.
